VANK Protests Removal of Dokdo Label from Google, Apple Maps

The Voluntary Agency Network of Korea, or VANK, has launched a campaign to protest Google and Apple’s move to delete the name of South Korea’s easternmost islets in the East Sea from its maps.

The cyber diplomatic organization founded in Korea held a demonstration in front of Google’s headquarters in the United States to take issue with Google Maps omitting the name Dokdo, as the islets are known in South Korea.

VANK members then visited top U.S. universities, including Harvard University and Georgetown University, and issued complaints about Japan’s territorial claims over the Dokdo islets.

VANK said it plans to send letters of protest to Google and Apple for 365 days onward.

VANK decided to set up a U.S. office at George Mason University in Virginia early next year to enable Koreans studying and residing in the U.S. to join in the organization’s activities and campaigns.
