CBS: 6 of 10 Americans Say Gov't Should Back Same-sex Marriage

A survey shows that six out of ten people in the U.S. support the recognition of same-sex marriage.

According to a phone survey on one-thousand-100 people by U.S. broadcaster CBS, 60 percent of respondents said that the federal government should legally recognize existing same-sex marriages and provide those couples with the same federal benefits as heterosexual married couples. Thirty-five percent opposed recognition in the survey.

The U.S. Supreme Court is weighing the question of whether the State of California's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. The top court is expected to deliver a final ruling by late June. If the ban is found unconstitutional, it will be automatically abolished.
