Prosecution Seeks to Suspend Ex-chief of NIS Smear Campaign Probe

The Supreme Prosecutors' office has officially requested the Justice Ministry to impose severe disciplinary action on the former chief of the unit investigating allegations the National Intelligence Service launched a smear campaign.

The prosecution’s inspection committee announced the results of its probe and its majority opinion that Yoon Seok-yeol should be suspended for three months.

Last month, Yoon brought additional charges against the state intelligence agency's former director, Won Sei-hoon, and arrested several NIS agents without reporting to his chain of command. He was removed from the investigation team and later argued that the head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office tried to impede the investigation. He also said his unit was under pressure by the Justice Ministry to soften its probe on the NIS.

Yoon and the head of the district, Cho Young-kon, collided over the issue last month as they appeared at the parliamentary inspection of their office. The Supreme Prosecutors' office launched its internal investigation the next day.

Yoon's boss Cho was acquitted of all charges, but he announced his resignation shortly after the committee’s announcement. Cho said there was no undue influence on the investigation but he is responsible as the district head over the discipline of his organization.
