'Philippine Air Force Looking to Acquire Additional 36 FA-50'

A British defense news media says that the Philippine Air Force is reportedly looking to acquire 36 additional South Korean FA-50 fighter jets.

IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly reported on Sunday that the Philippine Air Force (PAF) is seeking to purchase 36 additional FA-50PH as part of its medium-term modernization program “Flight Plan 2028,” which includes additional light combat aircraft and attack helicopters.

A senior Philippine Air Force officer reportedly said at the recent Asian Defense and Security 2016 exhibition in Manila that these fighters are needed in order for the Philippines to detect and counter threats in its economic exclusive zone.

The PAF purchased 12 FA-50 from South Korea in 2014 and the first two units arrived last November, with the remaining ten to be delivered by 2017.

However, it is uncertain if the PAF pushes for the additional procurement because President Rodrigo Duterte is negative about the Korean-made aircraft.
