Britain has reported a record number of new COVID-19 cases as it battles a surge in infections due to a new variant strain of the virus. 

The British government said it added 36-thousand-804 patients on Tuesday, the largest daily figure since the pandemic started in March. 

The country also reported 691 deaths within 28 days of a positive test on Tuesday, raising the country's death toll to 68-thousand-307. The country's cumulative caseload came to over two-point-11 million. 

There is speculation that Britain may impose stronger lockdown measures on England as the new variant of the coronavirus is rapidly spreading in the region.  

The variant, which is reportedly 70 percent more transmissible than existing strains, prompted the country to enter Tier Four lockdown in London and southeast England last week.
