Fires Destroy 255 Hectares of Forests in Andong, Yecheon

Wildfires that broke out Sunday afternoon have destroyed about 255 hectares of forest in North Gyeongsang Province. 

According to provincial fire authorities and local governments, the blazes destroyed 200 hectares of forest in Andong, 50 in Yecheon and five in Yeongju. 

The destroyed area is about the size of 357 football fields. 

Andong City resumed operations to extinguish the flames on Monday morning, mobilizing about one-thousand-350 officials and firefighters and 23 helicopters. Yecheon and Yeongju deployed about one-thousand-260 people and 16 helicopters. 

As of 7 a.m., about 30 percent of the fire in Andong has been contained, with about 60 percent in Yecheon and Yeongju under control.
