U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged the UN Human Rights Council to support resolutions addressing human rights violations in North Korea and other nations.

Blinken made the call on Wednesday in a pre-recorded speech for the high-level segment of the 46th regular session of the UN's top human rights body.

The U.S. top diplomat called on the council to use this current session to support resolutions addressing issues of concern around the world, including investigations into abuses and human rights violations in Syria, North Korea, Sri Lanka and South Sudan.

In a separate statement, Blinken said that from investigations into abuses in Syria and North Korea to promoting human rights for women and LGBTQI persons and other minorities, and combating racism and religious persecution, the Human Rights Council must support those fighting against injustice and tyranny.

Blinken also reaffirmed Washington's commitment to press for the promotion of human rights, saying that the U.S. plans to seek election to the next council that begins early next year.

Former President Donald Trump withdrew from the council in June 2018.
