The government is pushing to delete the world “Minjok” which translate to “our Korean race” that is included in uniform code of military justice enlistment oath, as the number of multicultural families are rising.
A military official said it is reviewing replacing the term with “the people of our nation” in the sentence of the oath that pledges “utmost loyalty to the nation and our Korean race as a soldier of the Republic of Korea.”
The government has recently revised its military service law to have Koreans from multicultural families to be included in the mandatory military service when deemed physically able. In the past, such people from multicultural families had been classified as unable to serve.
Due to the revision, some 100 young men from Asian multicultural families are currently serving in military.
