Celebrating the Joy of Independence

Korea’s Liberation from Japanese
Colonial Rule
Although Korea’s independence on August 15, 1945 was the outcome of the Allied Forces’ victory, it was also the result of the Korean people’s relentless struggle to reclaim their nation. People flooded the streets with makeshift Taegukgi and pickets and banners with words like “Hail the Joseon Independence,” “Cheers to Liberation” and “Establish Our Government” written on them. Everyone celebrated the independence, giving three cheers and singing the Korean national anthem.
