PSY’s Gangnam Style –
Hallyu in the World

Hallyu, the Korean Wave
Korean dramas and pop music began to draw immense popularity in Asia in the late 1990s. The drama “Winter Sonata” contributed to attracting tourists from Japan and China, while the “Dae Jang Geum” craze made Korean food, hanbok, hanok and music popular overseas.

The term “Hallyu” was first used by Chinese media in the early 2000s. The popularity of Korean pop culture spread from dramas, pop songs and films to other Korea-related products, including kimchi, gochujang, instant noodles and even home appliances. Young people around the world began to learn the Korean language and purchase Korean products out of their love for Korean people and the country itself.

More recently, the popularity of Korean pop music has been spreading outside of Asia, reaching South America, the Middle East, Europe and North America, as seen by the explosive popularity of K-pop artist PSY.
