CDMA Mobile Telecommunication Service Begins – The Prelude to the Mobile Revolution

The Beginning of the Mobile
Telecommunication Era
Since the 1990s, South Korea has been known as the world’s major manufacturer of semiconductors, mobile telecommunication devices and displays among others. Once large conglomerates joined the drive in the early 1980s, South Korea’s semiconductor industry overtook those of advanced nations at a rapid pace.

South Korean firms also emerged as strong players in the global mobile telecommunication market since becoming the first in the world to introduce the communication service using the code division multiple access (CDMA) method in 1996. Today, South Korea continues to fiercely compete for top place in the world’s smartphone market.
