South Korea's three major mobile carriers, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, commercially launched the world's first full-fledged fifth-generation(5G) network service on April 3. This has helped South Korea become the world’s first country to launch the 5G smartphone network service for the general public.
South Korea previously became the first country to successfully launch the 5G service for businesses on December 1, 2018.
5G network is characterized as high-speed, mass storage, minimal delay and hyper-connected service.
In theory, 5G allows up to 20 Gigabits per second data transmission and delay of one thousandth of a second. This allows hyperconnectivity between objects or Internet of Things(IoT).
Experts forecast the 5G service to transform the current ‘Mobile First’ era of prioritizing anything that’s mobile to a ‘Mobile Only’ era of all communications network converging through the mobile network.
5G is a key technology of the Fourth Industrial Revolution that is expected to innovate the existing industries through contents services like Augmented Reality(AR) and Virtual Reality(VR), smart office, security, mobility, smart city and smart factory.
