The Fox Sister

The Fox Sister
A long time ago, there lived a rich man with three sons. It was already a perfect family but the parents wanted one more thing—a pretty daughter. Their wish finally came true when the wife gave birth to a girl. Overjoyed, the parents and the three sons cherished the new-born baby as a precious treasure.

When the girl turned six years old, a strange thing happened in the house. The cows and horses in the stable began to die one after another, although they were all healthy the previous day. So, the old man told his eldest son to remain in the stable during the night to watch what was happening to the animals. As instructed, the eldest son hid himself in the corner of the stable and waited for night.

Everything looked normal and peaceful until he heard footsteps in the middle of the night. He felt a chill run down his spine but he kept watching the animals, with his eyes wide open. To his surprise, what he saw was his little sister! She sneaked into the stable, pulled out a cow’s liver and ate it quickly. Without even a scream, the helpless cow fell down. All these things occurred so fast, and the brother couldn’t believe his eyes. But he clearly saw his sister wiping her bloody mouth with her hand and disappearing.

The next morning, the eldest son told his father what he had seen in the stable. But the father yelled at him, scolding him for talking nonsense. The father believed his son was dreaming, instead of keeping watch. So he ordered his second son to watch the cows and horses that night. Just like the first son, the second son saw his beloved sister pulling out of a liver from a cow, which soon lay dead. The following morning, the second son told his father what he had witnessed the previous night. The father was very angry and blew up at him. And he gave the same mission to his third, youngest son. Much to the old man’s disappointment, however, he heard the same answer from his third son. The old man was furious. He thought the three sons were jealous of their sister because he loved her so deeply, and they made up a nasty story about her. The old man was so annoyed that he kicked them all out of the house and told them never to return.

The poor three sons began to wander around, with no place to go. Fortunately, they met a hermit deep in the mountains and stayed with him to study and help with his work. A few years passed. The three sons wondered how their parents were doing. When they told the hermit that they wanted to return home, he gave them three bottles of liquid with different colors—white, red and blue. He advised them to use the bottles in that order in case of emergency.

They finally arrived at their home, only to find that the house was deserted, with weeds growing here and there. When they entered the house, their sister ran toward them and cried bitterly. Asked what had happened to their father and mother, she answered that the parents were both dead. The brothers instinctively knew that their sister had killed them all and it was time for them to escape. The three brothers gave one another a meaningful look and began to run away. The sister cast off her human disguise, turned into a fox, and chased after the brothers. As she got closer to them, the eldest son thought of the bottles they received from the hermit. He took out the first bottle of white liquid and threw it at her. As the bottle broke, a bush of thorns came out. But the fox managed to free herself from the thorns and kept running after them. Then the second son threw the bottle of red liquid, which burst into a sea of fire. The fox was burned, but still chased the brothers. Terrified, the third son desperately threw the last bottle—the blue one. This time, torrents of water created a deep sea, engulfing the fox. Finally, the evil creature drowned.

The brothers wept for their lost parents and dear sister, recalling the happy moment of living with them.
