Jomagu, the Little Monster

2014-01-23

Jomagu, the Little Monster
A long time ago, a mother lived with her son and daughter. One day, while the children were playing outside, the mother cooked rice and some side dishes for lunch. When she finished, she went out to call her children inside. But she couldn’t find the kids nearby, as they had gone to the hills quite a distance from the house. While the mother was not at home, a little monster named Jomagu sneaked into the kitchen and ate all the rice and side dishes. When the mother returned, she found the dwarf goblin standing by the empty rice pot. When she realized the little monster had eaten the rice and other dishes, she was so angry that she hit the ugly creature with a poker. To her surprise, the monster just laughed and then grew a little bit bigger. The mother was even more furious and beat him again. This time, Jomagu grew even bigger. Each time she hit him, the monster only got bigger and bigger. Eventually, the monster became large enough to attack the mother. Not only did he knock her down, the evil creature also tied her up to a tree before leaving the house. The poor mother just had to wait for her children to come back home.

When her son and daughter finally returned home, the children were surprised and shocked to see their mother hurt and tied up to a tree. They quickly untied her and listened to her explaining what had happened. The brother and sister were enraged. They decided to take revenge on Jomagu and left home in search of the monster. They traveled far beyond the village for days, crossing the river and climbing the hills. At last, they reached a house in a deep forest, where Jomagu was believed to live. When they entered the house, it was empty. The brother and sister hid themselves in the attic and waited for the monster.

When it got dark, Jomagu entered the house. Of course, he never knew there were strangers hiding in the attic. He was mumbling to himself, “What shall I eat for dinner tonight? Shall I roast beans? Shall I cook noodles? Or maybe I can make some rice cake. That’s it! I’ll make some sweet rice cake for dinner.” He quickly started making rice cake and it took quite a while before he finished cooking. Before eating, however, the monster realized something was missing. “Oh, I need sesame oil. I’ll sprinkle some sesame oil on the rice cake so it can taste even better.” With these words, Jomagu hurriedly went out, looking for sesame oil. The children in the attic quickly went down and ate up all the rice cake, just as Jomagu had consumed all the food in their kitchen the other day. And then, they returned to the attic. When Jomagu came back with sesame oil, he found all the rice cake was gone. He was angry, of course, but he was also still hungry, so he had to cook something else. This time, he boiled some rice porridge. When the food was complete, Jomagu went out to get a ladle. In the meantime, the children poured filthy water on the porridge to keep the monster from eating it.

The monster was very upset, but there was nothing he could do. “What a bad day! I’m very tired, so I’ll just sleep now and eat something tomorrow.” When he entered the room, however, he found there were too many bedbugs. So he lay down on the floor of the hall. But he couldn’t sleep there, either, because of cockroaches. Then he went into the kitchen and decided to sleep in a big, empty pot there. When he was comfortably seated inside the cauldron, he put the lid over himself. Now he was pleased. It was warm and comfortable, and he fell asleep quickly.

The brother and sister sneaked into the kitchen. The brother sat down on the cauldron lid, while the sister built a fire in the fireplace with wood. Jomagu was trapped inside, but he had no idea of what was about to happen. As the sister put more wood on the fire, the pot became red-hot. Jomagu woke up as it was too hot in there. He screamed and tried to open the lid, but the brother pressed down the lid even harder. Eventually, the monster died in the hot cauldron and the children had their revenge.
