Kim makes a wide range of hanbok and traditional accessories, but what sets her work apart is that she recreates Korea’s beauty to suit different places, times, and individuals. Although she uses western laces and non-Korean materials, Kim Young-jin’s hanbok never sacrifices Korean heritage or the beauty of hanbok lines or Korean sentiments. Rather, the perfect collaboration between the East and West seem to impress foreign customers. Kim Young-jin’s hanbok brand is called “Tchai,” meaning “difference” in Korean. The name represents her belief that small differences in artistic finesse determine the quality of clothes. Her philosophy about such differences helped launch the ready-to-wear hanbok line of “Tchai Kim.” It’s already been 15 years since she started designing hanbok. She feels she has to work harder, but she’s not going to be greedy. Greed begets obsession, which leads to the loss of freedom. Maintaining unrestricted perspectives and making changes ceaselessly - that’s what defines Kim Young-jin’s identity. She strongly believes that such spirit can pave the way for a brand that survives for centuries.
