Korea’s Jazz Diva Woong San

2016-11-29

Jazz singer Woong San has been one of the most diligent and versatile performers in the Korean music scene. She has contributed to introducing the rather unfamiliar genre of jazz to a wider audience in Korea for the last 20 years. When she was in high school, however, she nearly became a Buddhist monk rather than a musician. Woong San is her Buddhist name that she received as a teenage apprentice monk.

When she was younger, she was mesmerized by the music of Billie Holiday, and that was the beginning of her journey to jazz. The jazz songstress has a strong fan base in Korea and Japan. Since her debut album in 2003, she has put out an album almost every year, with the 12th and latest one released lately. Long years of efforts and dedication made her a great artist capable of covering a wide spectrum of genres, ranging from standard jazz and rock music to chanson and funky music.

Jazz motivated her to constantly explore something. In the process, she hoped to find musical freedom through enlightenment. She has undergone spiritual training through jazz and her life has been a musician’s journey in search of freedom.
