Best of Hongdae

2016-03-09

The energetic neighborhood of Hongdae is one of Seoul’s most popular neighborhoods as evidenced by the large crowds on any day of the week. It can be overwhelming for first time visitors but here’s a roundup of some of the top things you shouldn’t miss out on when you’re there.

1. Spot and purchase the latest trends
Many attribute Hongik University being Korea’s #1 arts school as being a major factor for the Hongdae area’s creative spirit. As such, Hongdae is known for being the birthplace for many of Korea’s fashion trends and thus it makes for a great spot for shopping. This applies to the latest fashion and style in clothes, accessories, and makeup but it also extends beyond appearance to trends in things such as food. Many popular Korean franchise restaurants, for example, began in Hongdae and even today you’ll find a number of eateries, restaurants, and bars bringing uncommon cuisine and creative dishes and drinks to Korea.

2. Enjoy the music
For music lovers, Hongdae is one of the best regions to be. Street performances by various amateur and indie bands are common, especially in the Hongdae Playground Park near Hongik university. Various bars dedicated to music are also scattered around the area from LP record cafes to live jazz bars. Venues such as Sangsang Madang frequently hosts musicians of all genres. If you’re feeling inspired by all the music, don’t forget to belt it out at one of the many noraebang, or singing rooms, in Hongdae that are open late and way into the wee hours of early morning.

3. Dance the night away
Speaking of music, Hongdae is also one of the top areas for nightlife including clubs. Whether you’re a fan of hip hop, 90s Kpop, or EDM, there’s a club for you that’s almost certainly brimming with people who dig the same music as you. Finding it difficult to pick just one place? Try taking advantage of Hongdae’s “Club Day”. On this monthly designated day for one low price, you’ll have admission to a group of participating clubs for the night- perfect for those with a limited budget or time. 4. Find and pick up a bargain
One of Seoul’s best known flea markets happens right in the Hongdae Playground. On weekends, various artists and sellers set up makeshift shops selling everything from handmade jewelry to stationery and more. Also in the park are usually amateur bands, dancers, and other performances. It’s a great and inexpensive way to explore and enjoy the carefree vibes of the neighborhood.

5. Explore the surrounding quaint neighborhoods of Hongdae
Hongdae’s fast-paced energy is exciting but if you prefer its more quiet and less developed areas, walk away from the central Hongdae area to neighboring regions such as Yeonnamdong, Hapjeongdong, and Sangsudong. These quieter neighborhoods feature less global chain establishments and franchises and more independent and charming eateries, cafes, boutique shops, and more. In Yeonnamdong, the Gyeongui Line Forest Park is especially great to visit in warmer seasons as the new park, which was constructed over the old Gyeongui railroad tracks, is popular for picnics and gatherings.
