Best Hallyu Sites

2016-06-08

One of the most significant exports and cultural phenomena from Korea has been Hallyu, the Korean wave which refers to everything related to Korean music, dramas, entertainment, and culture. And, luckily for hallyu fans, Seoul is undeniably the center of it all. Here’s a roundup of what you need to check out if you’re a hallyu fan in town.

For K-Pop fans you’ll definitely want to check out the neighborhood of Cheongdamdong in Gangnam district which is not only home to some of K-Pop’s biggest entertainment agencies but also K-Road. At K-Road, you’ll not only be able to find the handprints of some of Korea’s top Hallyu stars but also related photo zones. The entertainment agencies around often house cafes and souvenir shops and, if you’re lucky, you may even catch a celebrity or two! Don’t forget to drop by the Gangnam Tourist Information Center as they may have some guides on hallyu spots for you to pick up.

Also two neighborhoods to check out are Yeouido and Sangamdong. Both are home to the headquarters and auxiliary headquarters of Korea’s top television and radio channels and also where you may be able to snag tickets for a weekly music show, sign up for a tour, or even catch sight of a celebrity or two in between their schedules.

While most K-Pop concerts generally happen in the Olympic Park vicinity, if you missed out on the blink-and-miss pace of tickets that are sold out for these events, why not pay a visit to a mind-blowing K-Pop hologram show? K-Live, operated by YG Entertainment, and SM Town in Coex, operated by SM Entertainment, both houses exhibits, immense merchandise stores, themed cafes, and more but both also operate mind-blowing 3D holographic shows that will make it feel as though some of K-Pop’s top acts are performing right before your eyes. At SM Town, you can even sign up to receive vocal and dance lessons, get styled up like a K-Pop star, do a photo shoot, and even shoot a music video!

For dining, SM recently opened its upscale multi-complex restaurant, SMT Seoul in Cheongdamdong with a diverse range of cuisines offered. YG Entertainment fans will also know about Samgeori Butchers, a casual Korean barbecue restaurant run by the agency in Hongdae. And lastly, SM Entertainment fans can pick up the line of products recently launched by them in collaboration with Emart including snacks, condiments, and more while YG Entertainment fans can drop by their cosmetics store, Moonshot Cosmetics for a range of beauty products. The Lotte L7 Myeongdong Hotel in Myeongdong also has a vending machine of official SM Entertainment products in their lobby if you’re in a rush for time.

For a chance to get up close with some shockingly life-like replicas of some of your favorite hallyu stars, the Grevin Museum features wax models of both top international and hallyu stars including Lee Min Ho, G-Dragon, Kim Soo Hyun, and others.

And lastly, one of the best resources to check out for all things Hallyu in Seoul is the Visit Seoul homepage which has an entire section dedicated to all things hallyu. On the site you can check the schedule of hallyu stars during the week you’re in Seoul or plan your trip around special recommended hallyu courses. A number of courses that are themed according to K-Pop, K-Drama, etc are detailed for you to visit such as drama and television program filming locations, cafes and restaurants operated by the relatives of stars and more.

Also of interest from the Visit Seoul homepage on Hallyu are two programs offered: one is the K-Pop Experience Program, where you can apply to receive K-Pop dance or vocal lessons for free, and the other is the MBC World Broadcasting Theme Park Tour Program, which you can go on a free tour of a major Korean broadcast center in Sangamdong. Go to English.visitseoul.net and click on the “Hallyu Tourism” section under “Highlights” for more information about these and other hallyu-related information.
