High Tech Seoul

2016-08-03

Despite its ancient history, you’ll find Seoul is a city of technological wonder. Here’s a roundup of some of the best high tech locations in Seoul!

It’s no secret Koreans love gaming with a number of international gaming tournaments hosted in Seoul. If you’re a gamer as well, consider watching a match at the recently opened Seoul OGN e-Stadium in Sangamdong which was recently built and opened. The gaming stadium is large enough to seat a thousand in the audience and tickets are inexpensive allowing fans to watch some of the best gamers in the world engaging in thrilling competitions in some of the most popular games such as Starcraft and League of Legends.

While in Sangamdong, you can marvel the area known as the Digital Media City, or DMC. For decades the surrounding region used to be a massive landfill with mountains of waste. The area is now a state-of-the-art digital media entertainment and technology hub that makes use of the latest in broadband optical communications network, wireless, and satellite infrastructure available. Not only has it attracted a number of research, technology, and other related companies to the area but it’s also home to many major Korean broadcasting stations.

Also in Sangamdong you can visit the DMC Gallery where a number of digital media projects are exhibited and the Digital Pavilion which holds a number of interactive exhibits where you can drive a virtual car, create a digital life form, and more. Sangam’s World Cup Park makes use of conservation and environmental technology. During the park’s creation, much of the landfill that used to be here were buried extremely deep underground. To make use of the gases that were being generated from the buried landfill, some 106 gas extraction wells have been built all over the park to collect, convert, and then channel the gas to provide energy for the area including the World Cup Stadium.

For some spectacular performances combining technology with Korean entertainment make a visit to either K-Live in Dongdaemun or the SM Town Coex Artium in Coex. Both are operated by major Korean entertainment agencies with K-Live run by YG Entertainment and SM Town Coex Artium run by SM Entertainment. Both places feature merchandise shops, cafes, and other K-Pop memorabilia, and their hologram shows is a synergy of cutting-edge 4D technology with K-Pop tunes and performances for an unforgettable show. At SM Coex Artium, you can even pay to do a professional photo shoot or even film a choreographed music video!

In Gangnam, the Samsung d’light store features not only the latest in electronics and technology but offers a preview of the future as well. Individuals of all ages, including non-techies, will enjoy the many interactive exhibits including a 4D rollercoaster experience. Also in Gangnam is a recently-opened virtual reality (or VR) showroom and café. Various VR systems from different companies are found here which you can try such as simulation experiences in car racing, archery, first player shooting games and more.

Drones have quickly become a popular hobby for many around the world in recent years and technology company DJI recently set up a flagship store in Hongdae for all things related to the latest in aerial technology. The 5-story building holds over 9,000 square feet of space to see, learn, and experience all things drone-related. Not only do they feature some of the latest drones available, there are educational galleries, and even a customer experience zone where demonstrations are made. Also be on the lookout next year when the city is expected to open a new drone park along the Hangang River for drone enthusiasts!
