Holidays in Seoul

2016-12-07

If you happen to be in Seoul during the holidays you’re in luck as there’s a range of things to do and see.

To help get into the Christmas mood, a number of Christmas markets are held in Seoul every year. The German Christmas Market, the French Christmas Market, and the European Christmas Market are the best known and includes traditional dishes and drinks, music performances, games, gift items for sale, and more. The dates change every year but this year the German Christmas Market will be held on December 3, the French Christmas Market on December 10, and the European Christmas Market on December 10 and 11.

Ice skating in the city is also a popular activity. The Seoul Plaza ice skating rink is perhaps the best known but this year will not open. However, the Yeouido Park Ice Skating rink will open from December 9 through February 14 while the I’Park Mall in Yongsan and the Olympic Park Peace Plaza ice skating rink traditionally opens every year around mid to late December. For a more private and less crowded ice skating experience, the Grand Hyatt Seoul’s ice skating rink, though pricier, will offer a more premium experience while the Lotte World indoor ice skating rink provides a fun and casual skating setting and is a favorite for couples.

Sledding can also be done in the city with places like the Ttukseom Hangang Park, Yeouido Hangang Park, Seoul Land, and the Korean Children’s Center popular options. This year, the Ttukseom and Yeouido Hangang Park sledding hills will open on December 19 until February 14.

Another great place to take in the festivities is at Seoul’s various amusement parks. Lotte World, for example, is holding its Happy Christmas Festival this year through December 27 with decorations, Christmas parade, performances, and even snow falling twice a day. At Seoul Land, the park is holding this year its Christmas Festival through Christmas Day which includes activities such as a Santa Run, family musical, donation campaign and more. Check the respective amusement parks for more information about these events.

Seoul’s main hotels also generally get into the holiday mood with not only decorations but various deals, packages, and services. The Millennium Seoul Hilton, for example, is known for their enormous Christmas tree and Christmas train with elaborate details. The Conrad Seoul is offering a Christmas-themed cooking class in which you can learn to make a variety of dishes. Cakes and desserts are also quite big in Korea’s holidays and various unique Christmas desserts and Christmas-themed cakes are available at many hotels. And, of course, the respective major hotels are offering a number of holiday packages perfect for a getaway during the busy holidays with great perks and amenities.

The outdoor displays of Shinsegae and Lotte Department Store in Myeongdong are known for their extravagant displays and decoration. You can also experience the holiday moods at major shopping malls such as the IFC Mall or the Time Square Mall. Besides the festive decorations, various promotions and holiday-related events are generally held at these shopping malls so be sure to check their homepages!

For some Christmas cheer in song and dance, the Camarata Chorale and Orchestera puts on an annual performances of Handel’s Messiah. This year’s performance will take place at December 10 at the Chungdong First Methodist Church. The Seoul Arts Center is also putting on a production of The Nucracker, the ballet near synonymous with Christmas, this year from December 17 through Christmas Day. Check the performance homepages for more information.

As for the New Years, various hotels, clubs, and venues will be hosting their own new year celebrations. For the traditional way though, gather at the Boshingak bell in Jonggak for various activities and performances before the traditional bell-ringing ceremony on December 31!
