Korean Unit in Lebanon Suspends Operations

South Korea’s Dongmyeong unit stationed in Lebanon has suspended their missions outside their compound.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said Friday that some 350 members of the unit are on standby after the U.N. requested that the unit suspend part of its operations. The U.N.’s request came after reports of a series of bomb attacks between Lebanon and Israel.

A missile recently hit Israel’s Nahariya coastal city, which is located about 30 kilometers north from Tyre, Lebanon, where the Korean unit is stationed.

Since being dispatched as U.N. peacekeeping forces in July 2007, the Dongmyeong unit has carried out various missions, including surveillance, medical services and combat training.
