A U.S. congressman has proposed a bill which would prevent foreigners from traveling to the U.S. for childbirth in order to acquire U.S. citizenship for their babies.

Submitting the bill to the House of Representatives, Republican Representative Elton Gallegly from California called for a revision to the existing immigration and nationality laws which grant U.S. citizenship to babies born to noncitizens within the U.S.

Conservatives have submitted similar bills on many occasions but none have been signed into law.

There has been a rising incidence of pregnant women from foreign countries visiting the U.S. for childbirth.
