US Union Org. Urges Obama to Revisit FTA with Korea

The largest federation of unions in the U.S. has urged the administration of President-elect Barack Obama not to ratify the free trade agreement with South Korea without renegotiating auto provisions.

In a policy proposal to the Obama transition team, the AFL-CIO reportedly urged the incoming administration not to submit to Congress a motion endorsing the FTA without at least revisiting auto-related provisions and addressing issues related to Korea's labor practices.

Inside Trade magazine also cited the group as asking the new U.S. administration to declare that it won't sign any more new FTAs for the time being. It urged officials to more thoroughly assess the deals’ impact on domestic employment, wages, bilateral trade and investment conditions, workers' rights and environmental standards.
