A daily communiqué of international events in Washington says the incoming Barack Obama administration is not likely to seek a renegotiation of the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement (FTA).
The Nelson Report said Friday that Obama’s transition team informed Seoul that it is considering not seeking a comprehensive renegotiation of the trade pact, but will instead work to resolve unsettled issues in the form of attached or follow-up documents.
The Korean government has dismissed the recent report, saying it has received no such information from Washington on the issue.
The report comes after Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton said earlier on Tuesday that Washington is willing to work with Seoul to reach agreements on auto provisions considered unfavorable by the U.S. She said Washington had failed to secure fair auto trade conditions in the trade deal and also cited perceived problems in agreements on the export of U.S. beef to Korea.
