US Experts Devising Light Water Reactor Scenarios

Written: 2009-01-23 12:24:47Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

U.S. experts on North Korean affairs are reportedly engaging in negotiation scenarios to prepare for the North’s possible request for light water reactors.

The Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) had pushed for a project to construct two light water reactors in North Korea in previous years, but plans were suspended in May of 2006 due to the North’s failure to live up to its end of agreements.

The U.S. experts plan to consult KEDO’s extensive experience when and if the North proposes discussions of light water reactors.

Former U.S. State Department official Joel Wit on Friday told Radio Free Asia that the issue of the reactors will emerge as a key factor in the third-stage negotiations of the North’s denuclearization.
