The U.S. House of Representatives has allocated two-and-a-half million dollars in energy aid for North Korea this year. That’s up 25 percent from the initial request submitted by the State Department.
The House passed during a plenary session last week a bill for the funding of government operations through the end of fiscal year 2009.
Under the bill, energy assistance funds will be released on the condition that North Korea effectively implements six-way nuclear dismantlement agreements.
The bill says that none of the energy-related aid funds may be made available to North Korea until Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reports to the appropriations committees on Pyongyang’s continued commitment to fulfilling its obligations under the six-party talks’ agreements.
The bill also calls for the allocation of around 931 million dollars in assistance to North Korean escapees and eight million for broadcasting geared toward listeners in the North.
