Pres. Lee: Missile Launch Won't Benefit NK

President Lee Myung-bak says North Korea’s recent moves hinting toward a possible missile launch may bring Pyongyang short-term gains in negotiations, but will not be beneficial in the long run.

The president, currently visiting Australia, made the remark in an interview with the country's daily newspaper, The Australian, on Wednesday.

He said that in the past, Pyongyang has fired missiles at politically expedient times, and is probably pursuing such actions again due to a new U.S. administration and a possible resumption to the six-party nuclear talks.

In response to questions regarding North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s health, Lee said a stable North Korean regime is favorable for inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation.

Kim Jong-il is believed to have suffered a stroke last year and reports say he has selected his youngest son, Jong-un, as his successor.
