USTR Nominee Calls for FTA Renegotiation

President Barack Obama’s nominee as the next U.S. Trade Representative, Ron Kirk, is opposing the current structure of the South Korea-U.S. free trade agreement.

In a confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee, the former mayor of Dallas said the FTA with Korea, as it currently stands, is unacceptable.

Kirk said that although the pact presents a big economic opportunity for the U.S., he believes that renegotiations are needed in regards to automotive and manufacturing provisions.

He claimed the Korea-U.S. FTA is not fair, and that Washington is prepared to step away from the pact if perceived problems are not addressed.
