Gov't to Mark Start of WEST Exchange Program

A ceremony marking the launch of a new exchange program between the U.S. and South Korea will open in Seoul on Wednesday.

An informational seminar will follow for the first group of 190 Korean students scheduled to take part in the new “WEST” program, which stands for “Work, English Study, and Travel.”

During the seminar, heads of a number of U.S. agencies sponsoring the WEST program will give an in-depth look into various language training programs and internships available to the students.

Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan and the head of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, Park Jin, will attend the ceremony and deliver congratulatory messages to those selected.

The U.S., meanwhile, will be represented by Ambassador to Seoul Kathleen Stephens and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Stanley Colvin.

The first group of Koreans will depart for the U.S. at the end of this month.

The WEST program, which was established during last year’s South Korea-U.S. summit, will allow up to five-thousand qualifying university students and recent university graduates from South Korea to enter the United States for a period of 18 months to study English, participate in internships, and travel.
