Japan Media Urge Reinvestigation to NK Abductions

Japanese media has urged the Japanese government to seek a reinvestigation into Japanese abductees in North Korea.

The media’s call came after the family of a Japanese woman, who was allegedly abducted by North Korea in 1978 and taught Japanese to former North Korean agent Kim Hyon-hui, met Kim in Busan on Wednesday.

Japanese dailies, including the Asahi Shimbun, said Thursday that Wednesday’s meeting provided a cooperation framework for Seoul and Tokyo to settle the issue of Japanese nationals abducted to the North.

Other media said the Japanese government is likely to soon seek a reinvestigation into the abductees cases soon.

However, some media, including broadcaster NHK, forecast Tokyo would face difficulties in resolving the abductees issue as Pyongyang continues to retain a hard-line stance on bilateral issues with other countries and is allegedly preparing to launch a ballistic missile.
