NK Informs Int'l Organizations of Launch Plan

North Korea has reportedly notified international organizations of its plan to launch a satellite between April fourth and eighth.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Thursday that North Korea has informed the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of its preparations to launch its "Gwangmyeongseong Two" satellite on its “Eunha Two” rocket.

KCNA says the notifications were made to ensure the safe navigation of planes and ships prior to the launch.

The report said that North Korea has recently become a member of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, and the Convention on Registration of Objects Launched Into Outer Space.

KCNA said the move will contribute to strengthening international trust and cooperation for space research and satellite launches for peaceful purposes.

Meanwhile, South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said it has received information from the IMO that the launch would take place on the aforementioned date with the satellite expected to leave from the North at a bearing heading east over the Pacific.
