A South Korean professor has been elected a member of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said that Sung Hyo-hyun, a geography professor at Ewha Womans University, will serve as a member of the IHO’s Guiding Committee for the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) for five years.

She is the first South Korean member of the international body.

The ministry expects Sung’s membership to help the nation’s efforts to register the name of the ocean floor in Korean waters with the organization.
