The U.S. says that on March 30th its ambassador to Sweden visited two American journalists detained by North Korea.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood told a news briefing that the U.S. government is maintaining a number of different diplomatic channels to ensure the release of the two women. The Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang represents U.S. interests in the communist state.

Wood said that no new statements regarding the status of the detainees have been made by North Korea since it announced earlier in the month that the two would be put on trial.

He said the U.S. government remains in constant contact with the two journalists’ families.

North Korea detained Laura Ling and Euna Kim, both journalists for Current TV, near its border with China on March 17th while they were shooting a documentary.
