Lee Leaves for UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen

President Lee Myung-bak has embarked on a trip to Denmark where he will attend a U.N. conference on climate change.

At the gathering in Copenhagen, Lee will introduce South Korea’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will propose the establishment of an international organization that would be charged with countering climate change.

Lee is expected to play the role of mediator between advanced and emerging countries that are at odds over targets for carbon emissions reduction.

He is also expected to suggest the establishment of a system that aims to have developing countries voluntarily reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Lee will express South Korea’s interest in hosting a climate change conference in 2012 while also introducing Seoul’s low-carbon, green growth policy.

Lee will hold summit talks with Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen before returning home on Saturday.
