Radio Free Asia reported Saturday that Italy and Germany will provide North Korea with aid to help the communist country survive the winter.

The aid includes over one-point-four billion won worth of food.

According to the U.S.-based broadcaster, the Italian government has decided to send to North Korea food valued at over 500 million won and medical supplies.

Since agreeing on a mutual food assistance program with North Korea in 2003, the Italian government has provided the North with food worth up to five billion won every year.

The German government will make its 900-million-won donation through the international nongovernmental organization “German Agro Action” and the Catholic aid group “Caritas.”

Germany’s donation will be used for food and winter clothes for North Korea.

Last year, Germany contributed over three-point-three billion won to NGOs for the purpose of helping the North.
