UN Climate Conference Recognizes ‘Copenhagen Accord’

The assemblage of 194 countries participating in the 15th U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen has decided to recognize an international climate pact that was forged by the U.S. and four partners on Friday.

The participants agreed Saturday to “take note” of the U.S.-led pact named “Copenhagen Accord,” instead of formally approving it.

The Associated Press said that the conference’s decision to take note of the accord provides it with “equal legal validity” as “accepted.”

The accord was not approved in the plenary session due to strong opposition from some countries like Sudan.

The pact will list the names of both supporters and opponents.

Prior to the agreement, opponents including Sudan, Bolivia and Cuba fought the U.S.-led pact, claiming that they were left out of the negotiation process to forge it. They also said that the deal was far less than a new binding climate treaty.

On Friday, the U.S., China, Brazil, India and South Africa made last-ditch efforts to produce an accord before the climate conference ended.
