Korea to Ease Tariff Burdens on Developing Nations

The government has decided to push a plan to provide tariff relief to developing nations.
A Ministry of Strategy and Finance official said Thursday that Korea would make efforts to give Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) coverage to developing nations.
The GSP involves exempting or reducing tariffs on items imported from developing countries. Unlike free trade agreements, where such benefits are mutual, the GSP involves a developed nation cutting tariffs on imports from a developing nation, but not the other way around.
The government will push the plan sometime near the end of the next year, after concrete reviews are completed on the items and tariff rates where the GSP will be applied and on the list of developing nations that may be eligible.
