A top Chinese official has expressed concern over mounting tensions on the Korean Peninsula, saying both Koreas will be gravely affected if a war erupts.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun made the remark on Thursday as he explained Premier Wen Jiabao’s upcoming plans to tour four Asian countries, including South Korea and Japan.

Zhang stressed that the two Koreas must stop raising tensions in the region by resolving their issues in a cool-headed and appropriate manner, with the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia in mind.
