People residing in Japan who wish to remit money to North Korea will now have to declare their plans to do so if they’re sending more than three million yen. Previously, the figure had been set at ten million yen.
Japan’s Asahi Shimbun said Friday that the Japanese government decided to lower the amount as part of efforts to impose further sanctions on North Korea for its sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” naval ship.
Tokyo will also lower the maximum amount of cash people who visit the North from Japan must declare to 100-thousand yen from 300-thousand yen.
The Japanese government is expected to reach decisions on further sanctions against Pyongyang during a Cabinet meeting Friday.
However, Tokyo decided to defer implementing a measure that seeks an increased ban on senior members of the Tokyo-based pro-Pyongyang group “Chongryeon” from reentering Japan due to humanitarian issues.
According to the Asahi Shimbun, Tokyo is seeking to unveil further sanctions against the North before leaders of South Korea, China and Japan meet for summit talks this weekend in a bid to make it clear that Japan supports South Korea and will assume a stern stance on the North.
