US Hopes China 'Does the Right Thing' on Cheonan

U.S. National Security Adviser James Jones has outlined the major features of the newly released U.S. National Security Strategy.

During a briefing at the Foreign Press Center in Washington on Thursday, General Jones said that regarding North Korea's sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” warship, the U.S. hopes China will certainly do the right thing in the face of the evidence that has been presented.

He said that although Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discussed various issues with Chinese officials during her visit earlier this week to China, it is still too early to say whether Beijing will support South Korea and the U.S. in their plan to send the Cheonan issue to the United Nations Security Council.

He said North Korea has reminded us of the fact that the region is still a very dangerous part of the world --- a fact he says has caused the U.S. to reengage with friends and allies.

Jones said that these types of situations tend to reinforce greater regional discussions on mutual security and that the U.S. and partner countries will do what they must to protect themselves.
