NPT: NK Will Never be Recognized as Nuclear Power

The Non-Proliferation Treaty's (NPT) 189 nations have adopted a declaration that denounces North Korea’s nuclear tests.

NPT member countries adopted the 28-page declaration early Saturday morning, Korean Time, at U.N. headquarters in New York after wrapping up a month of deliberations.

In the declaration, member countries expressed regret over Pyongyang’s nuclear tests and made clear that the North will never be recognized as a nuclear weapons state. The declaration also expressed hope that the six-way nuclear talks will resume soon.

NPT members also reaffirmed the importance of implementing U.N. resolutions that sanction the North for conducting nuclear tests and urged Pyongyang to fulfill obligations made during the six-way nuclear talks.

The member countries also urged North Korea, India, Pakistan and Israel to scrap their nuclear ambitions and return to the NPT.
