Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan will reportedly issue an apology Tuesday on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Japan's annexation of Korea.
The Asahi Shimbun said Kan is expected to express deep remorse for Japan’s colonial rule and will vow efforts to build future-oriented relations with South Korea.
The daily also said Kan is expected to announce plans to return to South Korea the Joseon Wangsil Uigwe, which is a collection of documents on Joseon Dynasty court ceremonies that’s currently held by the Japanese Imperial Household Agency.
The Mainichi Shimbun said that the prime minister is set to issue his apology for Japan’s colonial rule in a statement Tuesday.
The paper added, however, that the statement will not touch on the issue of whether Japan’s annexation of Korea was valid. The report said that the statement will also not address compensation issues included in the 1965 Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and South Korea.
