US Resolution Condemns NK Detainment of Fishermen

A U.S. lawmaker has submitted a resolution urging North Korea to release four South Korean and three Chinese fishermen it detained in the East Sea on Sunday.

The resolution, filed by Representative Charles Djou on Tuesday, also condemned North Korea for its firing of artillery shells into the Yellow Sea on Monday. It called on the North to immediately release the crew and to refrain from provocative acts.

The draft resolution said that the North is continuing down a path of provocations and that inter-Korean tensions have escalated since the sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” warship in March.

It called on the North to immediately stop any hostile rhetoric and activity towards South Korea and return to the six-party nuclear dialogue.

Pyongyang has yet to make any announcement on the status of the detained fishermen.
