Japanese Politician to Visit Yasukuni Aug. 15

The president of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party is reportedly planning to pay respects at Yasukuni Shrine on August 15th, the anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War Two.

Sadakazu Tanigaki made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday.

Yasukuni, which is a Shinto shrine dedicated to those who died protecting Japan, has also enshrined numerous war criminals of the Pacific War.

Tanigaki vowed during the September 2009 elections for party president to visit Yasukuni on August 15th of this year. He has already gone twice, last October and this April.

Meanwhile, none of the members of the Japanese Cabinet, nor Prime Minister Naoto Kan, will go to Yasukuni on August 15th.
