Senior Chinese Communist Party official Wang Jiarui has warned that the joint naval drills between South Korea and the U.S. in the Yellow Sea may cause a bigger collision.

Wang reportedly made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with South Korean lawmakers visiting China.

The Chinese government has voiced its opposition to the joint naval drills in the Yellow Sea multiple times, but it is rare for a senior Chinese official to use the expression "collision" in relation to the matter.

Some of the South Korean lawmakers who attended the meeting told South Korean reporters that they understood the term "collision" as being a military collision from the context.

In the meeting with the Korean delegation, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Jia Qinglin, said that he hopes the UN Security Council chairman's statement will mark the end of the "Cheonan" case.

He also said that North Korea's nuclear issue and peace on Korean Peninsula should be achieved through the six-party nuclear talks.
