'NK Leader Asked China for Food Aid and $10 Bln'

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il reportedly asked China for one million tons of food and 800-thousand tons of oil when he visited Beijing in May.

Quoting a diplomatic source on Friday, the Tokyo Shimbun said Kim also asked China to make an investment of ten billion dollars in a project to maintain and expand social infrastructure along the North Korea-China border.

According to the paper, the reclusive North Korean leader made the request when he met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. The report said that China vowed to provide some of the requested aid but that exact figures have not been confirmed.

In May, Kim made his first visit to Beijing in four years. He was expected to be successful in his bid to garner a promise for massive aid from the Chinese, but when he returned home one day earlier than scheduled, the possibility that Pyongyang and Beijing had differing views on the matter emerged.
