New Zealand to Probe Sinking of S.Korean Fishing Boat

The New Zealand government will conduct an investigation into a South Korean fishing boat that sank in waters 400 miles off the southern coast of the island nation on Wednesday.

Local media there say that South Korean authorities have accepted New Zealand’s proposal to look into the sinking.

The 1,599-ton Oyang 70 was carrying 51 crew members, including eight South Koreans, when it went down at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday (Korean time).

Forty-five members of the crew were rescued alive by nearby fishing boats. Three Indonesian crew members were found dead and three others remain missing. The vessel’s South Korean captain, Shin Hyun-ki, is one of the three who remain unaccounted for.
