Japan Mulls Cut to Sakhalin Korean Support Fund

Japan will reportedly go against its vow to continue providing funding in 2011 for programs that support Sakhalin Koreans.

The Sankei Shimbun reported the news on Thursday, saying that the administration of Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who made the vow last week in a statement to mark the centennial of Japan’s annexation of Korea, is only pretending to have a favorable stance toward South Korea. The paper said Tokyo’s actions are inconsistent with its words.

The Japanese government has a fund to support and repatriate the Sakhalin Koreans who wish to return to South Korea. The Sakhalin Koreans were conscripted to do labor on the Russian island north of Japan and were forced to stay there by the Soviet Union.
