Tokyo Mulls Joining PSI Military Drill

Japan is reportedly mulling joining a maritime military drill South Korea will hold in October with other Asian-Pacific members of the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI).

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said that Tokyo is considering sending an escort ship and maritime patrol aircraft to South Korea for the exercise as a way of showing its support for moves to block North Korea from exporting weapons and to help consolidate international unity against weapons of mass destruction.

If the plan to join the exercise is realized, it would be the first time for Japan to participate in a South Korean-led military drill.

The PSI drill will be conducted off the coast of Busan. South Korea, the U.S., Australia and Singapore have all signed on to participate.
