US Media: Prospects of New Nuke Talks Unclear

U.S. media say it is uncertain whether the six-way nuclear talks will reopen as South Korea and the U.S. have reacted coolly to China’s proposal to convene a meeting of chief delegates to the six-nation talks.

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal said Monday that China is seeking to have the members of the six-way nuclear talks convene what they described as emergency consultations in Beijing next month as a way to avoid a further deterioration of the situation on the Korean Peninsula following North Korea's artillery attack against Yeonpyeong Island. However, the two papers said South Korea and the U.S. were “unimpressed” with China’s proposal and reacted “coolly.”

The Washington Post said it is hard to tell whether the U.S., South Korea and Japan will seek to return to the six-way nuclear talks, noting that officials from both Seoul and Washington have said that the North shouldn't be rewarded for bad behavior.

The Los Angeles Times said South Korea appeared cool to China’s idea of more talks, adding that Seoul was angered by China's refusal to hold North Korea accountable for the artillery attack and the torpedo attack in March blamed on the North that sank the “Cheonan” naval corvette, killing 46 sailors.
